What is the Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS)?

The Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) is a system established in Australia to ensure that motorcycles are suitable for learner riders.

The scheme applies to all new and used motorcycles up to 660cc and sets performance and engine capacity limits to provide a safer riding environment for learner riders.

Only motorcycles that meet the LAMS criteria are approved under the scheme and are listed on a government website.

LAMS approved motorcycles are designed to be easy to handle, stable and have a low power-to-weight ratio. This makes them suitable for learner riders who are still developing their riding skills.

LAMS ensures that learner riders are provided with a safer and more controlled environment to develop their riding skills before upgrading to a more powerful motorcycle.

The LAMS scheme helps to reduce the risk of accidents and promotes responsible riding for learner riders.

What are the LAMS restrictions?

The Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) imposes the following 3 restrictions on motorcycles:

  1. Engine Capacity: The engine capacity is restricted to 660cc or less.
  2. Power-to-Weight Ratio: The power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 150kW/t.
  3. Output (electric motorcycles): Power up to 25kW or less for electric motorcycles.
Are Modifications allowed to a LAMS bike?

A learner approved motorcycle that is modified by incorporating optional components offered by its manufacturer, or otherwise modified so that it continues to comply with the manufacturer’s specifications is allowed, so long as it does not increase the power output of the motorcycle, nor reduce the tare weight of the motorcycle.

In NSW, it is the rider's responsibility to ensure that the motorcycle they are riding complies with the LAMS restrictions at all times. If the motorcycle has been modified, the rider should check that it still meets LAMS criteria before riding. If in doubt, the rider should contact the manufacturer or the Roads and Maritime Services for clarification.

What is the LAMS licensing process in NSW?

In New South Wales (NSW), Australia, the motorcycle licensing scheme is a progressive system that involves the following steps:

  1. Learner Plate (L-plate): Before you can ride on the road, you need to obtain a Learner plate (L-plate). You must be at least 16 years old 9 months. You must complete a 'Pre-Learner Course', and also pass the motorcycle Rider Knowledge Test.

  2. Provisional P1 Plate: After holding the Learner plate for at least 6 months, you can progress to a Provisional P1 plate. This requires passing a riding skills test.

  3. Provisional P2 Plate: After holding a P1 plate for at least 12 months without incurring any driving offenses, you can progress to a Provisional P2 plate. This involves another 12-month period of supervised riding.

  4. Unrestricted Licence: After holding a P2 plate for at least 24 months, you can take a riding skills test to obtain an unrestricted motorcycle licence.

Note: The above progression is a general outline and may be subject to change based on individual circumstances. You should check the most up-to-date information on the Road & Maritime Services website in NSW.

From organising a test ride, making a deposit, to finally picking up my bike was a good experience. Met Nic on the test ride day who was very helpful to get me out on the bike (RE Guerilla 450) for a decent test. Ride for about 90 minutes to see how I felt about it. After the ride said that I needed time to get more money together and never felt any pressure to buy with finance straight away as I didn't want to do that. On the day that I came back a couple of months later to make a deposit and order the bike I was helped by Cal (hope I got the name right). We had a good chat and he ran me through the process and introduced me to Kelly in finance to take my initial payment. On pick up day Was meet by Nic again to finalise and ensure I was happy with my bike before I rode away. Asked if I had any questions and also provided useful info on the run in etc. Looking forward to dealing with Brisans in the future for servicings etc. Very happy overall with all the staff.

I've had nothing but positive experiences everytime I've been to Brisans. I recently got a Triumph Scrambler 400x from here, and the process from start to finish has been very easy. Steve was very knowledgeable, easy to talk to, and professional. I can't recommend this place enough for anything motorcycle related.
